Barbate

Situated in the southwest of the province of C�diz in a setting wich the Greeks called Hercule�s Columns, Barbate offers the diversity, richness and colour typical of Andalusia.

On the other hand, Barbate is formed by 9 villages. We can emphasize Los Ca�os de Meca, Zahara de los Atunes y Zahora.

Marvelous beaches

The beaches, the river, natural park, yachting harbour, fishing port, golf, gastronomy, sports, fishing, history, monumental remains, the climate, the festivals and the people together make up a land with a thousand and one flavours just waiting to be discovered which can be enjoyed at any time of the year.

This corner offers 25 km of coast of excepcional quality with beaches of different characteristics and uses. The scenary is framed by the blue of the coast and the green of the Natual Park of Acantilado and Pinar de Barbate, which is made up of a large forest wich surrounds the town and heads towards the sea opposite eh 100 m high Tajo cliff.

The beaches of Mangueta, Zahora, Los Ca�os de Meca, Hierbabuena, Ntra. Sra. del Carmen, Ca�illos, Pajares and Zahara de los Atunes form a strip of fine golden sand stretching from the west to the east of Barbate coastline.

On the 24,96 km of coast you can enjoy relaxing strolis along the beaches with only the sound of the breaking of the waves, do water sports such as sailing, windsurfing and surfing, horse riding or go scuba diving.

Nature

The Natural Park of Acantilado y Pinar de Barbate is made up of the �Dunes of Barbate� and �Bre�as alta y baja� as well as a strip of sea parallel to the coast one nautical mile wide and the river marshes.

The 3797 heacteres of protected zones are divided into 5 basic ecosystems of great ecological value:

1-A cliff, 100 m above sea level wich goes from the beach of Hierbabuena to Ca�os de Meca.
2-On the edge of the cliff there is a pine forest, made up of different species of pine and dense Mediterranean shrubs.
3-The Dunes

A young young seagull searchin for something eat.

4-The Marine ecosystem of 940 hectares wich include a zone of rocky seabed. Formed by rocks that have fallen form the cliff.
5-The marshes of the river Barbate, an important sanctuary for the transit of birds from the 2 Cadiz bays ans a resting point for birds on the migration routes.

Tradition and Culture

A great tradition of this town is the tuna fishing. This complicated, ancient fishing skill is dedicated to catching tuna in two seasons � the straight season when the tuna is going towards the Mediterranean sea and the reverse season when the tuna are returning to the Atlantic. The Phoenicians, Romans, and Arabs used these techniques on our rich coast.

As historic note, we emphasize the Trafalgar Battle. The Spanish Armada, allied with the French army and under the orders of Villenueve, suffered a terrible defeat on 21st October 1805 at the hands of British fleet led by Nelson. The scene of battle was in waters of Ca�os de Meca off Cape Trafalgar.
