At present the Campo Burgo
Group is made up by three firms, two of which form part
of the D.O.Ca. Rioja and located in Alfaro: "Bodegas
Campo Burgo" and "Viñedos de
Calidad", and another one "Vinos Catal n
Bozal" forming part of the D.O. Navarra
and located in Corella. The latter joined the Group in 1983, while
Campo Burgo was acquired by Mr. Julián Cantarero in
1969. "Vinedos de Calidad" pioneered its
commercial activity with the Reserva Familiar 1990,
coming from the bodegaïs 17 hectare wide vineyard. The
majority of the Campo Burgo Groupïs shareholding belongs
to Mr. Juli n Cantarero-Sánchez, whose family
tradition in the wine-producing business goes three
generations back. In 1955 the financiers NatWest Ventures
and Axis joined the shareholding with the intention of
fortifying the companyïs patrimonial structure and to
finance the expansion projects of the Groupïs wine
cellars. The leading position in the ranking of Rioja
exporters which was achieved last year, for Campo Burgo
means the golden seal on a consolidation stage and the
starting point of a new stage with ambitious expansion
projects.
1996: A good year
for Bodegas Campo Burgo.
In the last years Bodegas Campo Burgo has been
developping a quality policy which has implied the
realization of strong investments in the enlargement and
modernization of its installations. A new high output
bottling line, stainless steel tanks equiped with
fermentation temperature control systems and a new grape
harvest equipment are some significant examples of this
renovation, which puts the bodega in an excellent
situation, both with respect to quality and
competitivity.
With a sales total close to 10 million bottles, an
invoicing of 2.500 million and profits of 150 million
pesetas, for Campo Burgo the export in 1996 has
represented 75% of its marketing. A proportion which no
other Rioja bodega has reached, and probably no other
Spanish D.O. either.
Campo Burgoïs foreign sales account for almost 10% of
the total export by the D.O.Ca. Rioja, and have been
directed towards 16 countries, amongst which Germany,
Sweden and Holland stand out as the main importers. Also
included are Argentina, Iceland, the growing Japanese
market, joined this year by the Norwegian monopoly,
China, Australia, the United States and all the
South-American countries.
The success of a
centenary bodega with future projection
The outstanding quality of its wines has
decisively contributed to consolidate the commercial
expansion of Bodegas Campo Burgo all over the world, but
it has particularly been the German market where Campo
Burgo has reaffirmed its leadership as most sold Rioja
wine in the last years, achieving a market share around
40% of the total Rioja wine sales in Germany.
In short, the growth of the export market still is the
priority for the bodega's commercial strategy, given the
absolute confidence it has in the big future of the Rioja
wine on foreign markets.
Third in range in
Navarra
The to the Campo Burgo
Group belonging bodega "Vinos Catalán Bozal",
founded in Corella in 1940 and part of the D.O. Navarra,
has gone through a spectacular commercial growth since
its adquisition in 1983 and is now situated amongst the
first three Navarra bodegas.
Thanks to investments of more than 150 million pesetas in
modern technology, oak barrels and plantation of
vineyards, it has been made possible to offer high
quality wines with a very updated presentation. As proof
of the achieved success, itïs worth to review the choice
of one of its trademarks, the red Don Fermín, as
official wine for the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
This meant an important support not only for the
producing company, but for the whole of the D.O. Navarra,
which herewith saw the quality of its red wines
recognized. A recognition which until then had already
been the case with respect to its exceptional quality
ross. "Señorío de Urdaix" and
"Marqués de Bajamar" are the trademarks with
which "Vinos Catalán Bozal" introduces its
vintage wines.
