Los Caños de Meca
Los Caños de Meca is a small beach community famous not only for its superb scenery, cliffs, sandy bays and sheltered water but also for being a lively nightspot in the summer months. Although a small resort with no large hotels (Madreselva is the largest) the area is extremely popular with Spaniards who flock here in the summer for the beaches, live music scene and great fish restaurants. Out of high summer the dunes, forests and beaches are a tranquil haven for relaxing.
Los Caños has two distinct seasons. In high season (mid-June to mid-September) the chiringuitos (beach bars) are in full swing and the restaurants overlooking the coast are very busy. The town has two small supermarkets but not much else in the way of services - Vejer, Conil or Barbate fill the gaps for shopping and banks etc. The rest of the year the beaches are virtually empty and a calm haze drifts over the area as visitors enjoy the open spaces and relaxed feel.
The lighthouse of Cape Trafalgar is just a 10 minute walk along the beach from the hotel. It was here in 1805 that Nelson defeated the French and Spanish fleet with superior seamanship. The lonely Trafalgar lighthouse is well worth a visit for its spectacular views across the ocean and into the Straits of Gibraltar. The best swimming area is in the Los Caños bays.
Surf
The local beaches (Los Caños, El Faro, El Palmar, Hierbabuena) have southern Spain’s best surfing. This is Atlantic coastline so expect a quiet summer for waves and good waves the rest of the year. Los Caños is also a famous windsurfing & kite surfing area, with excellent wave conditions in the winter for both surfing and wave riding. See the Activities section for more details…
The National Park
Los Caños is surrounded on two sides by the 5,000ha. Parque Natural de Las Breñas a forest of umbrella pines and dunes. The cliffs and beaches of the eastern end of Los Caños have been declared a Marine Reserve. There are many walking trails through the forest and along the cliff tops.
