The Church of Santa María, constructed by seamen in the 12th century, preserves a priceless collection of metal works, Flemish panels and Gothic sculptures. Santiago and the Central Zone In all senses, the centre of the province of A Coruña is Santiago de Compostela, the goal of every “pilgrim”.Santiago revolves around its Cathedral, surrounded by a labyrinth of churches and monasteries such as San Martín Pinario or San Payo de Antealtares, convents of cloisters and urban country houses. Entering the cathedral, all of its rites coming from the Portico of Glory, a work of the Maestro Mateo in 1188. Afterwards, continue the embrace of the Patron Saint and visit the Roman Mausoleum. If, in addition the botafumeiro amazes, then everything is complete. To get here, there is nothing like enjoying the surroundings by following the pilgrim walks. Covering these allows you to discover the beauty of the scenery and its art. Pilgrim Walks The Asturian Walk was the first of all, created by Alfonso II of Asturias in the 9th century. It covers territories of Vilasantar, where the Cistercians created one of their first foundations, the Monastery of Sobrado dos Monxes. After going past forests, meadows, the Romanesque Dormea and the country houses of Boimorto, the pilgrim must try the famous cheese of Arzúa, and then continue to O Pino, where there are important settlements in Castro Urdiales and Lardeiros, with the “cathedral of the mountain”.The French Walk was the one which perpetuated the pilgrimage. Within it the megalithic monuments and the ancient settlements alternate with pretty villages, such as Leboreiro or Furelos. The walk passes the Church of San Antolín de Toques, next to the settlement of A Graña; and then Santiso, with archaeological remains of all types and then visit the Romanesque Pezobre. Very close to Santiago de Compostela, a visit to the Monastery of Toxosoutos de Lousame is a must, and then on to Brión, where the relics of Santa Minia are worshipped. This is a land dominated by the framework of the Torres de Altamira. Gastronomy The A Coruña gastronomy combines the best of the coast and the inland. From the coast come excellent shellfish, famous throughout the world, such as crabs, barnacles, spider crabs and crayfish. There are also succulent recipes based on fish such as Caldeirada of Monkfish (a sort of stew), Galicain Hake (with onions, garlic and carrots) or grilled sole. |
