Town of Alfarnatejo, Malaga province

Alfarnatejo, called the Pyrenees of the South, is located in the northern part of the Axarquía and is circled by the mountain peaks of Chamizo, Gallo and Vilo.

This location is unique in the province of Malaga in that its complicated orography and distance from the capital transformed these surroundings into a genuine hideout for outlaws, whci forms part of the romantic legends of today.

The archaeological remains found in the narrow passes of the River Sabar show that there has been a human presence here since the neolithic age.

The village is found sheltered by the mountains, it is small and it has braod streets with simple houses.
Its main striking feature is the church of Santo Cristo de Cabrilla (18th century). Nearby the village are the ruins of a castle from the Muslim era. It is located on the slopes of the hill and is at virtually 900 metres altitude.

Its intricate mountains and passes are a strong attraction for the fans of hiking and lovers of nature in general.

The lack of architectural monuments in this village is more than compensated by its rich scenery, above all for the trail known as ‘La ruta de los tajos’, integrating those of Gómer, Doña Ana y el Alto del Fraile. The grandiosity of thesee geographic accidents which served as an impregnable refuge for outlaws in the 19th century, never leave one indifferent. Its abrupt forms combine on occasion with spaces in which holm oaks, Portuguese oaks or olive trees temper an orography dominated by contrasts; currents of water appear here and there, sometimes flowing into huge gorges, some into large river beds.
