Standing next to the Guadalcacín II reservoir, the old Majaceite River and very close to the Hurones Reservoir, Algar is a typical local village with whitewashed houses and forms part of the Route of the White Villages. (See Route of the White Villages) It is situated in a peaceful corner of the Sierra de Cádiz, with the grandeur of its peoples, its historic wealth and deep-rooted customs. On the Route of the White Villages, Algar is situated between the two most important Natural Parks in the province of Cádiz: the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park and Los Alcornocales Natural Park. Algar means “cave” in Arabic and was probably named after the many craves to be found in the surrounding countryside. The town was founded in 1773 by Domingo López de Carvajal. (see speleology in Algar) The most important monuments are the bullring, the Town Hall, the Alcala Gate, and The parish church of Santa María de Guadalupe, built in 1762-1763, whose main altarpiece was of Baroque style. It was later replaced by another of neoclassical style, with a neogothical polychromed image of the patron saint of the town. Source: Ayto Algar. |
