Algeciras

Its location, on the eastern end of the Algeciras Bay, across from Gibraltar, has made it one of the most important ports in Europe, for both passengers and merchandise.

The oldest area of the city, with narrow, steep streets, is the district of San Isidro. Among the most interesting monuments we have the church of Nuestra Señora de la Palma, from the 18th century, and the chapel of Nuestra Señora de Europa, from the 17th century.

Beaches represent one of Algeciras’ principal tourist attractions, among which we should highlight that at Rinconcillo, situated along the interior of the Bay at 3km from the urban centre extending to the mouth of the Palmones River; and the San García and Getares Beaches, with 3 km of white, fine sand located at 4km from the city in the direction of the Punta Carnero Lighthouse.

Another interesting activity is a visit to the Ensenada de Getares, offering high quality landscapes, comprised of attractive cliffs and a splendid beach, formed of the tributaries of the Picaro River and the Marchenilla and Del Lobo Brooks, which also form a small marsh area where they come into contact with the beach.

- Hotel Vime Octavio: The Hotel is a modern construction in the center of the town. Its optimal location situates it in front of the main railway station of Algeciras and very close to the port. The main motorways to Cádiz and Seville are easy to reach.

Festivals:

Carnival: The Carnival in Algeciras has been famous since the beginning of last century and re-established since 1981. It is based around celebrations in the Plaza Alta and the group contest in the Teatro Municipal Florida.
Feria: The Feria Real de Algeciras is held during the last week in July with attractions such as livestock and fishing contests, in addition to bull runs and unique stands.
Virgen del Carmen: The Virgen del Carmen Festival takes place on the 16th of July, with maritime processions and a gala in the Rinconcillo area.
Fiesta de Tosantos: The Tosantos Festival is celebrated in November

Los Alcornocales:

The area’s most western point has been declared a protected area and comprises part of Los Alcornocales Natural Park. Subject to a considerable conservation effort, the landscape is dominated by cork trees (Quercus suber), olives (Olea europaea), oaks (Quercus faginea and canariensis) and strawberry trees (Arbustus unedo), in addition to mastic trees (Pistacia lentiscus), palms (Chamaerops humilis) and Kermes oak (Quercus coccifiera).

The area is characterised by what are known as "canutos", narrow fluvial valleys with a high concentration of trees and shrubs such as alders (Alnus glutinosa), glossy buckthorn (Frangula ainus), snowy mespilus (Almelanchier ovalis), bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) and rhododendron (Rododendron ferrugienum).
