Almuñécar

Introductin

Cradle of the meditarranean culture, Almuñécar in addition to its great historic past ,has a splendid scenic base being between the sea and the mountains, enjoying a subtropical climate with mild temperatures throughout the year.

Bathed in the warm waters of the Meditarranean and surrounded by the peaks of the Sierra Nevada, it was called Ex by its founders, the Phoenician civilization of the 8th Century BC. They made of this a well structured town, with a thriving economy based on the salting of fish, an enclave sufficiently attractive that the Romans simply couldn’t miss out.

Historical legacy

During the Al-Andalus era, Almuñécar consolidated its position as the principal coastal town of the region. Abd al-Rahman I, landed on its coast in 755. He was escaping the rebellion of Damascus and was making his way to Cordoba where he founded the Umayyad Emirate. A large bronze statueat the foot of the Rock of Santo commemorates this event.

The coming and going of so many peoplesis well reflected in the great cultural heritage viewed in Almuñécar. The Phoenician Nnecropolis of the Bridge of Noy, the Cave of the Seven Palaces (Museum), the Monks Tower, the Columbario La Albina, the Arab Castle of San Miguel and the watchtowers or the Church of the Encarnación, are a fine sample of its wealth.

The Cruz del Santo is a priveleged place to view the diverse scenery which give Almuñécar its special character and from whose views you can see the diverse crops on which the exquisite local gastronomy is based, it being complemented by seafood.

In the botanical and archaeological Park of “El Majuelo” it is possible to view 182 different species of plants which represent all tropical zones of the world, while the Ornithological Park of Loro Sexi houses some 1500 breeds of birds, ranging from those which can be seen quite commonly such as pigeons to birds such as spectacular peacocks, parrots, cockatoos and swans.

Playas

Its extensive beaches, nature spots such as the cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo, and their proximity and good communications with the Ski resort of Sierra Nevada, make Almuñécar a must-visit for all nature lovers and sports fans who also want to enjoy its tranquility.

Herradura Beach represents one of those priveleged locations for a perfect stay (Hostel la Cañada for example). The area which gives it its name, the second largest part of Almuñécar, psoesses various natural characteristics such as the natural gate formed by its bay, where the maritime expeditions of the civilizations will not go unnoticed.

The richness of its maritime base made Herradura, which stretches from the Punta de la Mona to the Rock of Cerro Gordo, a stand out enclave for lovers of diving and those of water sports, whilst simultaneously, it is a chosen location for lovers of paragliding and hang gliding.

Festivals

As far as festivals are concerned, as in many other Andalucian villages, the cruces de Mayo (3rd of May), Easter, the night of San Juan (23rd and 24th of June), the patron saint festivals of Almuñécar (15th of August) and those of Herradura (19th of March), are celebrated, not to forget the festivals in the outlying regions such as that of San Miguel (28th to 30th of September)
