Ardales is at the foot of a steep hill which still has the remains of an old fortress. Ardales se levanta al pie de un escarpado cerro en el que todavía se conservan las ruinas de una antigua fortaleza. The physiognomy is of windning streets and whitewashed two story houses. The most notable of Ardales monuments is the parish church of Ntra. Sra. de los Remedios which dates back to the end of the 16th century. In the lower part of the village is the convent of the Capuchinos which dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries, and whose church has a belfry finished with crenellations. Also not far away is the Encarnación Hermitage, of a rectangular plan, with a barrel vault and decoration typical of the 18th century. Some five kilometres away from the urban centre is the noteworthy Cave of Ardales or of Doña Trinidad Gründ, with cave paintings from the Solutrean epoch (20,000 BC), an important Neolithic site (3800 BC) and various burial sites from the Copper Age (2700 BC). This cave is protected by law and for many years it was closed to the public, although now it can be visited by very small groups by prior arrangement. |

Some five kilometres from Ardales is the area of las Mesas de Villaverde and there you can find the ruins of Bobastro and a Mozarab cave church of great interest due to its mixture of Christian and Caliphate styles. In the municipal district of Ardales there are places which are simultaneously unique and spectacular such as the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, on whose almost vertical walls the artificial pathway of Caminito del Rey was built for King Alfonso XIII at the start of the last century. The Nature Park which borders the reservoirs of the basin of the Guadalhorce is another of the locations of environmental and ecological interest. |
