Carmona monumental city

Sitting on the fertile plains of the Corbones river, Carmona is a city remarkable for its monumentality and for the traces of differing cultures which have populated it for the length of its vast history. Churches, palaces and ramparts form part of the important artistic legacy which is housed in its historical old town dominated by the imposing image of its fortress of Arab origin, the Palace of King Don Pedro.

Its location close to Sevilla (30 km) allows it to take advantage of the huge legacy of monuments and art and also the numerous recreational possibilities offered by the capital of Seville.

Populated since the earliest of times Carmona has a long history which has seen the emergence and disappearance of the most diverse cultures. So it was that it was populated by the Tartesos before subsequently converting to be a Phoenician colony. Centuries later it became established as part of the Roman and Arab worlds, civilisations which left their particular mark on the rich monumental legacy which covers this Seville location.

The walled compounds, are of Roman origin and the gates of Córdoba y Sevilla, and the Anfiteatro belong to them. Also found there is their Necrópolis (1 BC.), situated on the outskirts of the city which have literally hundreds of tombs and rich burial chambers excavated into the rocks.

Inside the old ramparts, the old town of Carmona has managed to maintain its style of an Arab medina with streets in which beautiful examples of civil and religious architecture are found.

The Church of Santa María la Mayor towers over the entire profile of the city. It was constructed in the 15th century on the site of an old Muslim mosque. Other churches of interest are those ofSan Felipe (14th century), of Mudejar style, and San Pedro, of Baroque style, whose tower resembles that of the Seville Giralda.

How to reach Carmona, Province of Seville

With every pace houses in Mudejar style can be found, constructed between the 15th and 17th centuries and also Renaissance and Baroque buildings. Some of the buildings illustrated are the Palace of the Aguilar, that of the Rueda or the House of the Marqués de las Torres, which is the current location of the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography of the city.

The tour of Carmona can be continued by visiting the eighteenth Convent of the Barefoot y el Palace of the Gate of Seville, both of Cartagen origin. Or, if you prefer, you can ascend to the highest point of the town.

It is here that the Palace of the Almohad King Don Pedro, can be found, now the Parador of Tourism. Built during the Muslim era, the early Palace was the seat of the Kings of the Taifas. In the 18th century during the reign of King Pedro I “The Cruel” lengthy reconstruction work on the compound were undertaken, giving it its current appearance. According to legend this sumptuous palace became one of the favourite places of the Casrilian monarch.

Carmona offers many opportunities for recreation, from trekking and horseriding to playing golf on one of the excellent courses that exist in the vicinity of the capital of Seville. The youngest visitors can, if they want, enjoy the Zoo located in the town.
