Cartajima (Serranía Ronda)

Cartajima is a beautiful white village. It rises like a watchtower to an altitude of 846 metres, in the cliffs of the same name above the Alto Genal en la Serranía de Ronda.

The natural surroundings of Cartajima are of great beauty with the most striking being the limestone formations called the Riscos de Cartajima and the riverside area of the River Genal which invites the vistor to have a swim due to its lushness. The forests of chestnut trees flood the valley with ochres and yellows in the autumn, an exceptional natural spectacle.

The urban centre retains the physiognomy of the area with narrow, steep streets and the striking church of Ntra. Sra. del Rosario (from the 16th century). Outside the town it is possible to visit the medieval castle and a half-dozen archaeological sites such as la Cañada de Harife (Roman Baths), el cortijo del Ratón (Roman Necropolis) or the medieval villages of Cartamón y Casapalma.

Other places worthy of a visit include the caves of Carrión, Charcón Bajo, de la Miguela, de Ronda... Of equal scenic beauty are Los Riscos, la Canaílla del Lobo and Cepo or the abysses of de la Hurta y la de Veleño.

Cartajima celebrates its patron saint’s day in honour of the Virgen del Rosario in the middle of August. During Easter there are interesting processions, especially on the Saturday and on Easter Sunday which follow the traditions of the Cortesías, which consists of a reenactment of the reunion between the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus.

Due to its richness and diversity, large parts of the Serrania de Ronda are protected by law, the most important being the three Nature Parks of the Serrania: Grazalema, Sierra de las Nieves and Los Alcornocales. Amongst the three there are genuine natural jewels such as the Spanish Fir, the Golden Eagle and the Griffon Vulture. They are also the perfect locations for the infinite possibilities of leisure activities in the open air such as hiking, rock climbing, potholing or simply observing nature.
