Cazalla de la Sierra (Callentum to the Romans and Castalla to the Arabs) is a beautiful town situated in the heart of the Sierra Norte de Sevilla National Park at only 75 km from the Andalusian capital. The Sierra Norte National Park spans part of the Sierra Morena Mountain Range where the countryside predominantly consists of large pastures with oak trees. These trees shelter species threatened by extinction such as the rare black stork and the imperial eagle. This is the perfect spot for nature lovers. Cazalla sits on the banks of the Hueznar River and is surrounded by the charming scenery of the natural woods. Close by you can also find the Huéznar Waterfalls (25 km from Cazalla, in San Nicolás del Puerto), El Pintado reservoir, where you can do water sports, and the Viar River.![]() ![]() The Cazalla area of the National Park offers many outdoor activities, for example there are marked walking trails at El Molino de Corcho and Las Laderas, you can visit the Bajo de Jadraga viewpoint, spend the day at Isla Margarita and Molino de Corcho recreational areas or even go horse riding. Yet Cazalla is also famous for its Iberian pork products and aniseed cakes (in some regions of Spain and in South America aniseed is called ‘el Cazalla’). |

The monuments of Cazalla include the Santa María de Consolación Church, an impressive building joined on to part of the original Moorish town walls. It has been given National Monument status. You can also find the shrine to Nuestra Señora del Monte and the Monastery La Cartuja de la Inmaculada Concepción, which was built from the remains of the summer house of King Pedro I (the Cruel) and is now itself partially in ruins. The town also has some houses which are of architectural interest, like the XVI Century Palace in Llana Street, which is now a retirement home, and the Palacio de Justicia (court) in Plaza Mayor, which dates from the XVIII Century. As for ‘fiestas’ in Callaza, in August there are celebrations in honour of the town’s patron saint Nuestra Señora del Monte and the traditional Feria, which culminates in a pilgrimage to the Santuario, a shrine in the heart of the mountains. |
