Chiclana de la Frontera

Chiclana de la Frontera is located in the Andalusian province of Cádiz. Situated in the south of the Gaditanian Bay on the Costa de la Luz, its coast is washed by the Atlantic Ocean. Chiclana is in a half hour drive from Jerez airport, and in an hour and a half from the one in Seville.

Beaches, pinewoods and salt marshes can be seen in its landscape: marshes with a high ecological value, which are part of the protected area known as the Natural Park of the Bay of Cádiz; the long sandy beaches have favoured the development of a high-quality tourism; the pinewoods alongside the coast are the ideal complement for the beaches, sea and country in perfect harmony.

In the interior, vineyards, oak woods and meadows are part of the landscape; there exist also little natural reserves and lakes, as the ones called Jeli and Montellano, where many different bird species breed, some of them in danger of extinction.

In six kilometers from the coast, the urban center of Chiclana has all public services and equipments, social, transport, cultural, etc. It also offers important touristic attractions: monuments, an important comercial area, markets, handicrafts, wine cellars, restaurants, bars, etc.

La Barrosa beach stretches along eight kilometers of fine sand, from the little island of Sancti-Petri to the tower of El Puerco.

The first stretch of La Barrosa is a built-up area, with a promenade provided with all type of services and touristic equipments: bars, restaurants, a comercial centre, etc; in a second stretch, starting in the urbanization called “Complejo Atlántico”, La Barrosa is a wild beach.

La Barrosa enjoys the Blue Flag for the Clean Beaches of Europe since this reward was created. This beautiful beach is considered one of the best in the Andalusian coast, due to its fine and clean sand, the clearness of its water and the beautiful dunes and cliffs that characterize its wild area.

How to get to Chiclana

Hostels, Hotels and apartments in CHICLANA

In the wild area is the urbanization called “ Novo Sancti-Petri”, a touristic and sports complex with four-stars hotels, golf and riding clubs, a commercial centre, etc.

The beach of Sancti-Petri is two kilometers long and is situated opposite the little island of the same name.

Next to this beach is the area of Sancti Petri, which has a pleasure harbour and fishing ports, a yatch club, sailing and windsurfing schools, a dry dock. an infirmary and a ferry service for sea excursions.

The village of Sancti Petri is now abandoned, but it was the home of a colony of fishermen. It is not common to visit an abandoned village, that is why it has a special charm to walk through the streets, imagining how it was in the past. Some buildings can be still distinguished, as the school, the Town Hall, the cinema, etc. You should not miss this walk.

The most important monument in the history of Chiclana would be what was the most famous temple in the Old Times, the Temple of Hercules-Melkart, that existed in the times of the Phoenicians and Romans in the little island of Sancti Petri. Among the historical characters that visited it were Amilcar Barca and Julio Caesar. In its site was built the Castle of Sancti Petri (18th Century).
