PhotoAlbum of ChipionaChipiona

Chipiona is to be found in the far west of the province of Cádiz, on the Costa de la Luz near the estuary of the river Guadalquivir.

The impressive sight of its lighthouse (the highest in Spain and third highest worldwide) is to be seen at the Punta del Perro, offering a welcome to visitors and relief to mariners. The name Chipiona really belongs to the lighthouse, as the Romans gave the name “Turris Caepionis” to their first basic construction.

The town, which was a rural and seafaring spa in the 19th century, is one of the most popular resorts on the Costa de la Luz for today’s visitors.

Formed by the action of the two rivers Gaudalquivir and Gaudalete, the countryside around Chipiona is a fertile plain which makes full use of greenhouses in the production of cut-flowers and other market garden produce. Along the coast there are dunes, marshes – ideal for wildlife, and beaches – ideal for people.

The coast of Chipiona, which stretches for over seven miles, has superb beaches with every kind of service. The best known ones are: Playa de la Cruz, de la Canteras, De Regla, Camaron, Tres Piedras and Ballena.

The best beaches are the ones with fine white sand, which have been awarded the European blue flag of approval since 1989. The outstanding one among them is Playa de Regla.

Las Canteras beach, ChipionaAn interesting outing is to visit one of the four corrals – Longuera, Trapillo, Cabito and Nuevo - which are opposite the town of Chipiona. Locals use traditional fishing techniques that make use of low lying stretches of irregular red sandstone which provides shelter for fish during low tides.

The Chipiona forest surrounding the town is a good place to observe the flora and fauna of this area, such as the chameleon.

Santuario Virgen de Regla

A good trip to see some of the important buildings is to go from the port along the coast until you arrive at the Santuary de Nuestra Senora de Regla, then continue until the 13th century castle, the lighthouse and the Merced Tower.

Pine wood of ChipionaOne of the most popular past-times is golf and the 18 hole, par 72, course at the Costa Ballena Club, designed by Maria Olazabel attracts many enthusiasts.
Water sports, such as sailing, windsurfing are always well used. But there also lots of people who enjoy beach volleyball, riding or just watching the world enjoying itself.

But if you want to do something serious why not visit some of the local wine producers and taste the delicious muscatel de Chipiona in the Bodega Cesar Florido and the Bodeguita de Castillito(calle Castillo 1). The origin of this wine goes back some five centuries where the muscatel grape is grown in soil that is a mixture of clay and sand which produces a quality that, they say, is fit for the palate of a god.

During the summer especially, Chipiona has lots of bars, cafes, restaurants and leisure attractions around and on the beaches which provide entertainment until the early hours of the morning.

Chipiona Carnaval

Among the local festivals the ones that stand out are: Romeria del Pinar (June), La Velada de Nuestra Senora de Regla (September) and the Carnival de Chipiona (February) where hundreds of people dress up and enjoy the festivities throughout the night and the day.
