Competa Suspended at an altitude of 630 metres at the foot of the Sierras de Tejeda y Almijara, and some 50 kilometres away from Malaga, Competa appears in its robes of whitewashed town and an unmistakable smell of moscatel wine. There are old houses with traces of the Moorish, Roman and Christian, and also new homes housing those who seek the sun. There are the mountain ranges of Tejeda and Almijara, which have been declared a Natural Park and a National Big Game Reserve. Competa has unique architecture. From one of the curves in the street placed in the village there is an amazing view of the area. The first thing to attract the attention is the white of the facades of the houses which contrasts with the blue of the sky and the colour of the lattices and shutters of the houses. The centre of activity is the Plaza de Almijara, fronted by its fountain, where the distinctive imbalances of the constructions are characteristic of a mountain village. From here all the streets and lanes start with their amazing and beautiful corners filled with flowers and plants. |

The parish church, dedicated to Our Lady of Asunción, dates back to the end of the century with an ocher coloured tower 30 metres in height which Isabel I of Castile had built in 1505. In the larger altar there is an Assumption, painted by Francisco Hernandez in 1972. The mural on the font is of the chapel of San Sebastián, the patron saint of construction. Another interesting building which it houses is the Town Hall. One of the biggest of Competa’s festivals takes place in August. Although known as the Night of Wine the celebrations begin in the morning in the Avenida de Torrox where wine, bread salad and cod are shared among the residents and the visitors. An orchestra animates the celebrations and there are performances by local dance groups and groups dancing the Verdiales. The meal lasts until three or four in the afternoon. At night wine is given out from a large barrel placed in the town square and the festival continues with flamenco performances until the early morning. Source: Competa Council |
