Introducción Cortegana is situated in chestnut woods in the South West of the Sierra Mountain Range in the middle of the Aracena and Picos de Aroche National Park.![]() There are two particular types of tourism here, either relaxing, rejuvenating holidays or more active ones discovering the National Park on foot, on horseback or by bicycle. ![]() The town sits at an altitude of 690 metres, surrounded by hills that reach almost 800 metres. ![]() The extremely well preserved Castle of Sancho IV dominates Cortegana and is the first thing visitors see. Numerous cultural ceremonies, for instance the Jornadas Medievales (Medieval Days) at the start of August, take place in and around this fortress. During this festival visitors can enjoy the experience of emerging themselves completely in XI to XIII Century medieval town. There is jousting, an medieval market, witch burning, jugglers, live chess matches, fancy dress competitions, exhibitions, theatre, music…. Everything reminds you of the period; the people, the smells and the food. ![]() ![]() Other noteworthy monuments in the area are the XIV Century Divino Salvador Parish Church, which has national monument status and the Gothic Mudejar style San Sebastián Church which dates to the XV to XVI Century. |

Cortegana’s cuisine, as in any other Sierra mountain town, is based on products deriving from Iberian pork. If you visit the area you can help enjoying its cooking.![]() There are various restaurants and bars with where you can try typical mountain dishes. In Autumn the typical meal is stew with mushrooms. Apart from the Jornadas Medievales, other interesting festivals include La Semana Santa (Holy Week) which is celebrated with great fervour here. In mid June there is also a pilgrimage to Lo Corte, a village six km from Cortegana, for the fiesta of San Antonio de Padua. Then in September these mountain people all participate in fiestas in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad. |
