El Burgo (Sierra de las Nieves)

El Burgo and its surroundings constitute a priveleged location for nature. It is one of the most striking and beautiful areas of La Sierra de las Nieves, where all the elements of its biodiversity combine to offer the visitor a paradise of tranquility and open air activities.

La Sierra de las Nieves is a natural museum open to all the public, a space full of life, history and culture. The biological diversity of the Parque Natural y Reserva de la Biosfera is original and varied as a result of its priveleged location between the Meditarranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. At other times, while the peaks are white in winter, the snowfields keep their icy treasures in pits of snow, to distribute these to the villages of the province during the hot summer. It is from this old and now lost task that the village derives its name.

Every corner is a little paradise, every track a microcosm and every rockface a challenge. However, the real botanical star of La Sierra de las Nieves is the Spanish Fir, the Andalucian Fir, inherited from the glacial past when the climate was much colder, which has nevertheless endured thanks to the special conditions in this area.

Amongst possible monuments to visit in el Burgo is the Arab castle. It is even possible to go further back again to the Islamic era when it was an important frontier bulwark. After the Christian conquest it was destroyed and reconstructed various times and later on houses were built along the walls being integrated into the urban centre of the village.

- Hotel Casa Grande de El Burgo: This is a stately home constructed over 150 years ago and completely restored and renovated in 1999. The hotel is located right in the centre of town and is an ideal place to relax, hike, cycle, go horseriding… and many other things as well.

En medio de un fabuloso paisaje y en el interior del Parque Natural de la Sierra de las Nieves se encuentran las áreas recreativas Fuensanta y Los Sauces, que están totalmente equipadas para pasar un estupendo día en total contacto con la naturaleza.

Levantada sobre una antigua mezquita en el S. XVI, se sitúa la iglesia de la Encarnación, en el punto más elevado del casco urbano de El Burgo. Posee un balcón colgante que ofrece imponentes vistas de la sierra de las Cabrillas y de los campos de El Burgo atravesados por el río Turón.

La Iglesia de San Agustín alberga en su altar mayor las imágenes que gozan de más devoción entre los burgueños, como las de San Agustín y La Inmaculada Concepción, sin olvidar la de la Virgen Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, protectora del pueblo y conocida por sus insignes milagros.
