Guadix - province of Granada, SpainThis important village in the Province of Granada, with more than 20,000 inhabitants, is located 60 kilometres from Granada City, 200 kilometres from Murcia and 110 from Almeria. It is one of the oldest settlements in Spain. Before the arrival of the Romans in the Phoenician and Cartagene epochs, it was called Acci, meaning “Land of the Vineyard” since they were very abundant in all of the hollow of Guadix. Afterwards the Roman colony of Julia Gemela Acci was established by victorious legionnaires. From this point it started to assume the status of a town established in the hills and lowlands of what is now Guadix. ![]() A long and rich history is reflected in its streets and corners, and in its monuments. Visiting the area of Alcazaba and its surroundings are a delight for the senses. The Plaza de la Constitución with its arches, is a demonstration of the legacy of the Christian repopulation following the Reconquest; the stand out element being the Balcony of the Corregidores, on the southern facade of the Town Hall. The Cathedral, built on the old mosque, dates from the 16th century, Gothic and Renaissance inside, and renovated in the Baroque epoch, its main facade reminding us of the style of Borromini, whereas the imposing tower rises above the roofs of the town. |

More churches, such as that of San Miguel y la Magdalena, one of the oldest in Guadix, speak of the Christian heritage of the village. From the viewpoint of the Magdalena there are beautiful scenes. Returning to the mediaeval area, with its narrow streets with Muslim flavour, we see the Convent of the Concepción and the Peñaflor Palace, a pretty, large stately home of the Baroque epoch. We are now in the oldest part of Guadix, next to one of its emblems, the Alcazaba. Declared a National Monument, its origins date back to the Caliphate, a fort and at times a palace, from where its large fortified towers dominated the town and the lowlands.![]() Between palcial homes and the Market of los Pastores we arrive at the Church of Santiago; built over an old mosque, its Mudejar tower reminds us of Islamic heritage. It was built with the Renaissance façade of Diego de Siloé. Going toward the area of Ermita Nueva there are cave houses , and we can then go to the Church of San Diego. An essential visit is the popular Cave of Padre Poveda and the Cave Museum of Arts and Popular Custom, which gives information about this unique form of living.![]() ![]() Regarding the gastronomy of Guadix, between the typical dishes of international fame there are talbinas (a dessert), porridge with pepper and herring, cooked pork in earth pot, fried potatoes with onions, sausage in garlic, chorizo with crumbs, peppers with sardines and rin-ran (a mix of tomatoes, peppers and onions). The most well-known dessert is a type of cake called tocino de cielo. The festive calendar of Guadix has certain festivals which stand out such as Feria (August), the Cascamorras (September), the Pilgrimage of San Antón (January) or Easter Week. |
