Introduction

Nagueles beach, Marbella

Marbella, which is 57 kilometres away from the capital Malaga, is a marvellous city situated in the heart of the Costa del Sol. You will find it to be a cosmopolitan enclave, the city is renowned for offering its thousands of visitors who come here no end of possibilities for enjoying their free time: beaches, numerous golf courses, 4 leisure harbours and unbeatable natural surroundings with luxury hotels, restaurants of all types and an intense nightlife.

Calle Trinidad

Marbella offers its visitors special charms with its contrasts of sea, mountains, towns and a cosmopolitan city. Stretching from the coastline of Cabopino to Guadalmina is a beautiful beach of fine sand interrupted only by the leisure harbours of Cabopino, Marina La Bajadilla, Marbella y Banús.

Marina

The municipal district consists of various population centres: Marbella, with a Moorish and Andalucian historical centre of narrow lanes adorned with flowers and the smell of orange and lemon blossom; the well-known Puerto Banús, famous for having the most important leisure harbour in Europe; San Pedro de Alcántara, where in addition to finding magnificent beaches you can also discover archaeological remains such as the Paleochristian Basílica of Vega del Mar or the Roman baths; Nueva Andalucía, and the Eastern area of the city with centres such as Las Chapas, Elviria y Cabopino amongst others.

Origins

As regards its origins, this territory, so altered in reality, has had a human presence from very early on. It would appear that the Carthaginians also passed through this area judging by the evidence found next to the mouth of the River Verde. It was however the Roman presence which began to leave behind footprints such as the abovementioned mouth of the River Verde, where the remains of a Roman town were found, probably built in the 1st Century from which the mosaics stood out very clearly.

Ancon Beach, Marbella

During the years of Arab rule, the eastern centre of Marbella and its teritories found themselves in the hands of the Marinids in the 12th century before becoming part of the Kingdom of Granada after the conquest of the city in 1485. Two defensive towers from this era remain today in the old part of town. Also still present are the walls and the castle, of Mozarab ancestry.

Monuments in Marbella

The tourist fame of Marbella has pushed its monumental wealth into second place, which may surprise the visitors who discover it. About 5 kilometres away from the city, on the banks of the River Verde, the remains of a Roman town dating back to the 1st century can be seen where articles of ceramic, marble and metal can be found.

Encarnacion Church

Within its own urban centre there are the remains of an Arab castle. Also of interest are various historical buildings dating back to the 16th century: the home of the Corregidor, the chapel of San Juan de Dios, and the church of Santa María de la Encarnación.

Calle Pedraza

The centre of the old town which can sometimes be ignored, is practically as it was in the 17th century. It has been maintained magnificentlyin favour of an intense commercial life, where the most kaleidoscopic mix of establishments can be found in surroundings of white streets and balconies with geraniums.
