Matalascañas

Torre de la Higuera, better known as Matalascañas is the largest tourist centr4e in the province of Huelva and for its part the beach is the closest one to Seville (approximately 60 minutes from Seville and 30 from Huelva).

It is situated in the municipal district of Almonte, in a priveleged location close to the famous village of El Rocío and located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Parque Nacional de Doñana, which has been declared a Biosphere Reserve.

But it is not just on account of its location that it is a good place to visit, Matalascañas and its beach have the best tourist infrastructure on the Huelvan Costa de la Luz. There is a range of hotels and services of very high quality which open on to the sea for five whole kilometres, surrounded by nature.

Unspoilt beaches of fine sands surrounded by the transparent waters of the Atlantic Ocean extend from the east to the west along a distance of more than forty kilometres where the Doñana meets the sea.

There are restaurants, bars and beachside bars to sample the tasty fish of the area, and some 3200 hours of sun every year in a mild climate making for a pleasant stay at any time of the year.

For the more active visitor, Matalascañas has all the activities which give it its youthful and dynamic feel. Numerous sports can be played on its extensive beaches such as basketball, beach volleyball, beach soccer, racing along the sands; or, in the water, Windsurfing, sailing, waterskiing, competetitive fishing, and there is also hiking.

Opened in 2000, the magnificent Golf Course of Dunas de Doñana has 18 holes, strategically situated between natural areas of extraordinary beauty which give experimenting with this sport sensations which are difficult to foerget.

As night falls, tranquility arrives, stroked by a sea breeze. There are establishments which offer music, enntertainment and live events for all tastes until the sun comes back for a new day. One of the characteristics of Matalascañas which sticks in the mind is the rock which dominates the beach of Torre de la Higuera, which is nothing more than an old watchtower or beacon which the surges of the sea have caused to collapse, looking upside down with its beaten foundations rising to the surface on the exact same shores which in other times it protected.

Regarding visits other than the previously mentioned Parque Nacional de Doñana and village of Rocío, we can emphasise the museums Torre Almenara, which house the Centre for the Interpretation of thw Coastline where you can learn about the natural and human values of this area, and the Museum of the Marine World, where the world of the sea and its inhabitants are recreated amongst other things.
