PhotoAlbum of OlveraOlvera

Olvera is on the Route of the White Villages in the heart of the Cadiz mountains. Olvera's main monument is the city itself, with its whitewashed houses, steep narrow streets all running up towards the impressive silhouette of its church and castle at the top of the hill. Its origins are considered to be Arabic.

There are other theories on the history of its name including the idea that “Olivera” was related to the amount of olive trees in the area. The most reliable information on its origins takes us back to the time of the Arabs when it was known as “Wupira”.

Olvera Castle

Its castle formed part of the Kingdom of Granada 's defensive line. In 1327, Olvera was conquered by Alfonso XI, who pardoned the assassins that lived for a year near the town on the frontier with the Moors.

Olvera was declared a “collection of Historical and Artistic Buildings ” in 1983. As a whole the town is a treasure that brings together beautiful buildings, splendid open spaces, stately houses, nature and other wonderful aspects of incalculable value.
