Almudaina Palace

It is an old Muslim palace of the Banu Ganiya, subsequently converted into a palace by the kings Jaume II and Sanç. Its beautiful pointed arches and the chapel of Saint Ann are worth mentioning. The palace is located near the cathedral.

The erection of Palma cathedral was immediately after the Catalan conquest in 1229. Tradition has it that a storm arose as Jaume I was sailing towards the island. He vowed that if they landed safely he would build a temple in honour of the Virgin.

The Lonja

La Lonja (Exchange fish market) is a high-point of Catalan civil gothic style. It has numerous sculptural works, Claus Sluter´s Merchant´s Guardian Angel in the main façade being worth mentioning.

It is worth mentioning its XIV century Gothic cloister and its plateresque façade designed by Francisco Herrera. Inside the church the tomb of the medieval philosopher Ramón Llull can be found, and outside the basilica stands the statue of Fray Junípero.

It was erected with a defensive purpose as well as for a royal residence; nevertheless this last task was rarely accomplished. The enclosure was, mainly in the XVII and XIX centuries, used as a dungeon. It houses the City History Museum in its interior.
