Situated on the north-west corner of the Bay of Cadiz on the Costa de la Luz, Rota, a seafaring and agricultural town, has become one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the province due to the beauty of its beaches, the hospitality of its people, its extraordinary gastronomy, its lively streets and the variety of cultural and sporting possibilities. According to historians Rota is of ancient origin. Due to its coastal location many different cultures and civilisations have left there mark here such as, the Tarshish, the Romans and the Arabs in whose time it was known as Rabeta-Ruta. Rota is situated in an area of fertile farm land (with excellent tomatoes, water melons, melons, peppers and pumpkins) and its cuisine is based on local products. Its sea and land have generated its culinary art, its most typical dishes being sea bream cooked in the Rota style, (the “Sea Bream Festival” in August is dedicated to this famous dish. The festival has been declared of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia), “Berza Roteña” ( cabbage stew Rota style), the Rota herring, Sea Bream soup, Shrimp Omelettes and the incomparable Rota “Tintilla” , a unique sweet wine.. Rota has good sports installations, such as: a Golf Club, a Tennis Club, a Paddle Tennis Club, a Horse riding Club, the Urta Yacht Club, a Sailing School , a Fishing and Hunting Centre, a Sports Complex and the “Astaroth” Marina . (Awarded the Blue Flag). Los Corrales de Rota Corrals form part of the heritage of Rota, received from the Arabs that used to construct parcels in the sea formed upon perfectly mounted stones. Fish would find themselves trapped inside the stone parcels at low tide, allowing the fishermen to catch the fish with relative ease. Thanks to the great range of fauna, the Corrals are an ideal place to carry out a marine photography session. They also hold a great ethnological interest. Because of the unique characteristics of the Corrals, they deserve special protection. For that reason the site has been declared as a Natural Monument.
