Playa de San José

San JoséSan José, launching point to one of the most unspoilt areas remaining in Europe, starts in the fishing village located in the bay of San Jose, between Cerro En medio and Cerro de Cala Higuera. Now, however, this small village has swapped fishing for developing a tourist industry both coherent and sustainable with the aesthetics of the surrounding areas and it has transformed itself into the "tourist centre" of the Park.

Genoveses beach, San José
It is surrounded by beaches, small coves and much natural beauty and you can gaze at the sky from its low rise buildings. In addition, the last remaining unspoilt beaches of the Meditarranean are located in the surrounding areas; amongst these, Mónsul, Barronal y Los Genoveses stand out.

View of San JoséSan José has varied and good services such as restaurants, cafes, hotels and tapas bars, and is ideal for sports having diving clubs, canoeing, kayaking, equestrianism, cycling, and also hiking trails, making for a generally pleasant holiday.

Port of San JoséYour attention is drawn to the Leisure Harbour, located at 36º 46' N. 2º 6' W. It has 244 morring points, a quarter of which are for rental. In addition, San Jose has a wide range of gastronomy as well as snack bars. Although none of the beaches or coves in San Jose has beachside bars, there are always some close by from which you can easily access any bar, restaurant or ice cream parlour.

San Jose BeachThis is the most urban of the beaches and according to some the beach with the best facilities. However, we cannot talk of the beach of San Jose so much as we talk of the beaches, because the bay of San Jose, in addition to being the main beach, also has some small coves next to the small promenade and the leisure harbour. Starting point for all of this is the bay of San Jose, bordering the Leisure Harbour on one side and the Guardia Civil on the other. It has buoys, it is watched over and has facilities and during the summer also bins, showers and lifeguards.

View of San JoséOn the main beach, which is next to the promenade, there is also a small passageway for pedalos and surfboards to enter and leave with changing rooms and a first aid point. Also on the beach next to the promenade there are swings for the children. With fine sand everywhere, always in good condition as there are maintenance staff, it is certainly the fullest beach, although a long way from the typically overcrowded Meditarranean beach. In addition to the pedalos, beach umbrellas and deckchairs can be rented and there are places to play volleyball.

How to get to San José

Mónsul beach, San JoséThe beaches of Los Genoveses (which take their name from the historic landings of 1147), Monsul, Barronal and Media Luna are, according to the experts, the best of the Park, especially where sunbathing is concerned. Its proximity to San Jose is, in fact, distant and lonely.

To the Genoveses BeachTwo factors – the only access is via dirt tracks more than 7 kilometres in length – have kept this place unspoilt for the duration of its history. There are not even restaurants or basic facilities, although there are a few places to park a car. There is a path between the village and Los Genoveses.

Genoveses beach, San José
Visitors will certainly see the change confronting them in a place of wild scenery without any type of human involvement, and with a certain feeling of paradise as well.

Mónsul beachThe route to these places can also be travelled by bicycle, or foot. By walking, it is possible to visit Mónsul, the inlet of Media Luna, the Cala Carbón and Torre de Vela Blanca within about six and a half hours. The route is practically traced along the Almerian coastline.

Windsurf in Genoveses beachDuring the summer it is best to go there whilst the sun is shining. What the area has to offer is generally its scenery, but there is also the possibility of going diving and viewing the rocky depths of the sea.

the lighthouse of Cabo de GataFrom San Jose, always on regional roads, you can go by car or bicycle to see thw awesome views from the cape which gives its name to all the natural territory of the Gata. The exact distance varies between 20 and 30 kilometres depending on the path chosen. The route which must be followed goes from San Jose away from the coast unless you prefer the hiking route which is shorter in kilometres, and very pretty (next to the sea) but also much longer time-wise.

Regarding interesting festivals, the ones that you stand out are: The Festival of Tourism on the 8th of August and "Los Chisperos", on the 16th of January. ( Chisperos are ropes filled with powder and rolled with fine thread. When they are set alight they burn randomly according to which direction the people are moving in.) There are also San Sebastián, on the 20th of January; and the Festival of Autumn on the 25th of September.
