Tarragona preserves numerous constructions from this period. The murals which encircle the historical centre were built in the 3rd century BC, although they were rebuilt in the mediaeval epoch.

Next to the sea the steps of the Roman amphitheatre rise which, in its day (2nd century) had a capacity of more than 12000 people. In these locations people came to watch gladiators fight beasts. Old Tarraco also had a theatre and a circus. The theatre, outside the walled precinct and in what is now the Archaeological route, took advantage of the undulations to create the stands.
