Torremolinos, located just 12 kilometres from the provincial capital Malaga, in the heart of the Costa del Sol, has a long and varied history, as attested by the numerous Phoenician, Greek, Roman and Arab vestiges found in the area. The first written chronicles of Torremolinos date from 1489, the date on which the Catholic Monarchs decided to impose repopulation on the area known up to this point as Torres de Pimentel. Years afterwards in 1502 control of the village passed to the capital Malaga. This coastal enclave built various castles and watchtowers for its own defence. The Castle of Santa Clara, dating from the 18th century, was one of the most important found in the area. The greatest changes experienced in Torremolinos came from about the middle of the 20th century when this fishing village discovered the enormous tourism potential offered by its extesive coastline and its benign climate. Since then, Torremolinos has transformed itself into one of the focal points of tourism on the Costa del Sol thanks to an important range of tourist services and the quality of its infrastructure. El Bajondillo, La Carihuela, Los Álamos o Playamar are some of the magnificent beaches which adorn this coast, where you can also find many important hotel complexes, residential complexes and a conference centre which holds many important international meetings. The possibilities in Torremolinos are innumerable: from having a swim and enjoying the sun all year round to playing virtually any sport, including golf, or visiting the numerous restaurants where you can taste the typical fried fish. |

In the historic part of Torremolinos the parish church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen can be found, and it is also possible to discover beautiful examples of noble architecture, of which the most striking is Casa de los Navaja, which was built in the 19th century. However, the most important symbol of the legacy of the town is the Torre de Pimentel or de los Molinos, of defensive origin and which gave the town its name. In the meantime, in the area known as Cortijo del Tajo important archaeological sites dating back to the neolithic times, and also Roman and pre-Roman times have been discovered. The dates that stand out on the calendar of Torremolinos are the Festival and fiestas in honour of its patron saint, San Miguel, which are celebrated between the last days of September and the first days of October. One week earlier the popular Pilgrimage of San Miguel takes place. In la Carihuela every 16th of July the Festival of Carmen is celebrated, whose central act is the procession of the Virgin. |
